Berlin, Germany –
September 28, 2007
People to People
International (PTPI) presented its Outstanding
Leadership Award at the National and Regional
Council level to Edward Tucker of Wilmington,
Delaware. The award was presented at the PTPI’s
Annual Awards Luncheon held in Berlin, Germany. This
award is presented annually to a national or
regional leader who has made a substantial
contribution to People to People International for a
period of at least two years.
While serving as
president of PTPI’s Delaware Chapter, Ed Tucker
achieved many goals and led the chapter through
several important structural improvements. Some of
his accomplishments include calling for a review of
bylaws, establishing a production schedule for the
chapter’s newsletter and improving membership
recruitment practices. In addition, he worked to
increase the chapter’s visibility by improving the
chapter’s website (www.ptpde.org).
Approximately 120 PTPI
leaders from 20 countries attended the Awards
Luncheon which was held in conjunction with PTPI’s
Annual Board of Trustees Meeting. One of the
highlights of the Awards Luncheon was the
presentation of PTPI’s most prestigious award, the
Eisenhower Medallion, to Lech Walesa, former
President of the Republic of Poland. During his
acceptance speech, he told the audience, “This
generation is faced with an enormous opportunity for
peace, prosperity and well being.” He also expressed
his support of the goals of People to People
International and his admiration of the efforts of
the volunteers in the room and the achievements they
personally had made.
PTPI also honored
Operation Smile with its 2007 Make a Difference
Award. Co-founder Dr. William Magee accepted this
award on behalf of the organization. Operation Smile
is an organization that repairs children's cleft
lips and cleft palates. Since 1982, more than
100,000 children have been treated by thousands of
volunteers in Central and South America, Africa,
Middle East, Eastern Europe and Asia. PTPI’s
Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Troy Nash, told
the group, “This is a special day of celebration as
we honor our extraordinary friends around the world
for their contributions toward educational, cultural
and humanitarian activities.”
People to People
International (PTPI), with World Headquarters in
Kansas City, Missouri USA, was established by
President Dwight D. Eisenhower on September 11, 1956
to enhance international understanding and
friendship through educational, cultural and
humanitarian activities involving the exchange of
